Welcome to the Mullen boys and girls track and field page. The Mustangs have been among the best Colorado has to offer in one of the oldest prep sports on local record (there were unofficial state meets from 1902-21). In boys, the Mustangs have won 13 team titles, the most recent coming in 2009. It puts them fourth behind Fort Collins (20), and Fountain-Fort Carson and Denver East (18). For girls, Mullen has won a state-leading 11 times since team standings were first kept in 1975. The Classical Academy has won 10 times, and Akron and George Washington each have won seven times. The Mustangs will compete in Class 4A.

Head Coach: John Hancock


A native of Denver, Hancock has the lineage, longevity and accomplishment of a coaching icon. He’s a graduate of Lakewood High School as well as the University of Northern Colorado. His first year teaching at Mullen was 1977 and he’s in his 33rd year of coaching track and field (he also has coached football mane cross country). He has won assorted coaching awards, including national coach of the year, and led the Mustangs to 12 state championships, 11 in boys. His grandfather, John Hancock, was a coaching legend at Colorado State College in Greeley. He also started the prep state wrestling tournament in 1936. Father Tom Hancock led Lakewood High to football prowess, winning three state titles before retiring in 1968. Uncle Jack Hancock started the wrestling program at Holly High and sister Carol Patterson coached in Mesa, Ariz., after competing in gymnastics at Arizona State.
