Bad Weather Protocol
Well, winter has arrived!  With winter on its way, we are making preparations for our Weather Related Late Start/Cancellation operations.  Mullen administrators keep tabs on the weather conditions as they are developing.  The following details the steps Mullen takes to decide whether a Late Start/Cancellation is in order:

  • Mullen Administration begins its storm watch 24 hours before the storm is to hit Denver.  At 4:00am (the morning of the storm), Mullen Administration begins its decision making process.  The administrators keep tuned in to the latest weather forecasts and makes its decision based on this information.
  • If a cancellation is in order, Mullen Administrators contact Channels 4, 7, and 9 by 5:00am to relay the appropriate information. We will not contact television stations for late starts.
  • The Mullen Website will also be updated regarding any Late Start/Cancellation.
  • A text message will be sent to parents and students with Late Start/Cancellation details. In order to receive a text, please sign up for Celly text messages. This can be done by visiting www.mullenhigh.com.

Weather cancellations and/or late starts are based on weather forecasts and existing weather conditions within Denver Proper. As these are subject to both sudden change and to regional variation, parents always have the final say regarding the wellbeing of their students. The Administration will respect and support the decision of any parent/guardian who determines that the weather or road conditions in their area make it unsafe for their students to travel to school.  The school will excuse the student’s absence/lateness for that day. Per our standard procedure, a phone call or written excuse note to our Attendance Office is required for an excuse absence or lateness.  Teachers are allowed to make exceptions for a student’s class attendance and/or make-up work on such days. Once again, please know that the Mullen Administration makes its Late Start/Cancellation decisions based on the best available and latest information from the weather stations.  We ask your patience and support for our process.

Out of gratitude, on Tuesday, November 22nd, the Mullen Administration invites all students and Lasallian educators to the 5th annual free meal of Thanksgiving. Seniors will remain on campus to celebrate as part of our inclusive community.

The Mullen Engineering Club Needs Your Help!!!
Our club aims to reach out to students and show them the amazing world of engineering through fun, challenging projects and competitions held throughout the school year.Through our diligence, and with YOUR help, we hope to bring and accomplish many projects and competitions that teach our members about the fun and usefulness of being an engineer.  To learn more, and/or donate click here.

The Ambassador Program
Do you live east of I25? If so, we need your help as a volunteer to reach out to our next incoming Freshman class and welcome them to the school we love. The commitment is easy and fun while working with other MHS parents in teams of 2-4.  Volunteers will contact a group of incoming families by phone a few times through out the year and organize a meet & greet with their small group over the summer. We will supply all of the talking points and a timeline to make it as easy as possible. This is a fun way to get involved and help those new to our school feel welcomed.  For more information please contact Lori Perry and/or Merry Logan

Host Families Needed
Are you interested in a rich cultural experience for your family that will also help an international Mustang reach their goal of graduating from Mullen?  Three returning Mustangs from China need host families for the 2016-2017 school year (2 seniors and 1 sophomore).  If so, please contact Patricia Finney for detailed information about hosting a returning Chinese international student for the 2016-2017 school year.  Monthly stipend included.

Enjoy an International Experience This Summer
By hosting a French or Spanish student.  Up to 60 kids will be arriving in Colorado for 2-5 week homestays with families.  French kids arrive in June and Spanish kids in July.  Some may have volunteer internships, they may take ESL or specialty classes, or they may choose to immerse themselves in the activities of their host family.  Each student has a unique time frame, so I can match you with someone who will fit your family’s summer schedule.  Since the kids come independently, they can be placed with families in any community within an hour's drive of Denver. Compass-usa.net provides a small weekly stipend to hosting families. Contact joyweinstein@gmail.com<style="font-size: 12px;" /> for more information; please include your phone number with your inquiry."

Mullen Weekly - November 22nd, 2015
11/23/2015

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and it is only right we pause and ask ourselves for what are we thankful?  Let us be thankful, despite a world filled with tragedy, we have people who triumph despite horrific circumstances. Let us be thankful for every person who takes from society through crime and terror, there are millions of others who give back selflessly.
And, let us be thankful for each other.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let us take a moment out of our busy lives to reflect on the grace we encounter daily.  We can never forget there is grace to be found in the simplest of things.  I invite you to take a moment and read a prayer written by Brother David Steindl-Rast.

“Source of all Blessings, you bless us with fleeting encounters-moments when our path crosses just once with that of another, whether the one who holds a door open with a smile, the receptionist who offers us a kind word, or the child skipping past us in the park. May these blessings find us awake, alert, and ready to pass on their gratuitous sparkle by a sparkle in our own eyes.”

I wish each of you a Thanksgiving filled simplicity, grace and most importantly love. - Mrs. Kloosterman

Mullen Weekly - November 15th, 2015
11/15/2015

"B" Week

One Hour late Start on Wednesday, November 18th

Update on the Brothers and the Garage Fire
First and foremost, the Brothers are fine. Two were transported to the hospital for precautionary care. They were evaluated and quickly released. The Brothers are anxious to return to their home.  Unfortunately, this is not going to be possible for sometime.  In the meantime, they are comfortable, albeit displaced, in a nearby hotel. Media reports of three people being rescued from the second floor were not accurate.  Two of the Brothers were out of the building and the third needed assistance to move from his room.  An accidental car fire started the fire and two automobiles were destroyed. The fire was confined to the garage, which is heavily damaged. There is the usual smoke damage throughout the residence. There is considerable work ahead to determine our path for restoration.

The Brothers have the necessary provisions and accommodations.  If you would like to send them your best wishes, we will make sure they receive your greetings.

ACADEMICS/COMMUNITY LIFE

Congratulations Class of 2015 - The graduation ceremony for the class of 2015 took place yesterday. Among the 159 graduates there was a total of 14,515 hours of community service, $17 million in Merit Awards, 21 NCAA Athletes and 1 in 4 students will attend a Catholic College or University. Congratulations Mustangs! The community is proud to have you represent our Lasallian heritage throughout the country. The attached Graduation Week Essay sheds further light on the outstanding accomplishments of our entire Mullen Community.

One Book, One School Program - Mullen High School is excited to announce the One Book, One School program that will begin this summer. In our Lasallian tradition of creating and maintaining relationships, this project serves to enhance literacy skills and bring generations of students, families, educators, community members, together in reading one literary selection. The unique benefits of this program surface when the varied readers discuss and analyze the insights and observations they have gathered from the book.  Like traveling to a foreign country, students, families, faculty, and staff are united through a singular literary experience...a singular literary language.

The selection for a One Book, One School for the 2015-16 school year is: All the Light We Cannot See. This Pulitzer Prize Winning novel by Anthony Doerr is a highly-regarded, critically-acclaimed, historical fiction novel that has something for everyone: history, geography, science, math, literary elements, culture, and religious and philosophical themes, just to name a few.  The following is a link to the book's summary: Synopsis.

All students, regardless of grade or course level will be required to read the printed version and complete the complementary assignments. While a student may not be scheduled for an English class until second trimester, it is critical that he or she read the assigned text before school begins in August. When the 2015-2016 school year commences in August, we are planning a variety of activities that will facilitate the sharing of this unique literary experience.

The One Book, One School program will be an annual summer program for the Mullen community. We are very pleased with our inaugural book selection. Until then, thank you for your continued support. Happy reading!!

2015-16 Schedules Students received their course schedule last Monday during 1st period. Students are to review and meet with counselors for any unbalanced schedules. Changes to the schedule may be made if the reason fits within the schedule change policy guidelines as outlined in the handbook. Changes are to be made by the end of finals.

2015-16 iPad Assistance Application - iPad assistance is now available for the 2015-2016 school year. Please click on this link to fill out an application. The deadline to apply for assistance is May 29, 2015.

Thanks to All Our Parent Volunteers - Thank you to our Mullen Parents who provided the delicious breakfast and lunch items during Lasallian Heritage Week to our staff. Your thoughtfulness and hard work does not go unnoticed. Your kind deeds warm our hearts and lift our spirits. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Donna Case and all parents who graciously treated us.

2015 Prom Details - Tickets are now on sale for the 2015 prom. Click here for information.

After Prom - The Mullen High School After Prom will be held immediately following the Prom on Saturday, April 18 from 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM at X-treme Sports Challenge. The MPA is requesting a $35.00 donation to cover costs of the After Prom by Monday, April 13th. In addition, we are asking parents to help with tax deductible donations such as cash, gift cards, and prizes (tickets to events, item for college dorms, music/sport items, camping gear). Cash (to purchase prizes), gift cards (REI, Sports Auth., Movies), or Gift donations need to be labeled with your name, value, and in by Tuesday, April 14th. Click here to make your donation online.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - For parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, April 16, the school is going to modify the approach it used last trimester. The parents of freshmen and juniors are scheduled for conferences that will take place between 1-4 PM. The 5-7 PM session is dedicated to sophomore and senior parents. For families with more than one child enrolled at Mullen that would be required to attend both sessions, please choose one session or the other. Also, we understand there may be a conflict that prohibits you from attending the designated session. If this is the case, please attend the session that is more convenient. However, we ask that you make every effort to adhere to the prescribed conference schedule. Our goal in separating our student body’s conference times is to help ensure that lines for particular teachers are shorter and improve accessibility to the entire faculty. Click here to view the parent volunteer sign-ups.

Time to Upgrade the iPads - How old is the phone you have with you right now? Most people have two year renewal plans to upgrade their phones so they can take advantage of the latest technology. Well, the iPad2 turned four years old in March, and it can simply no longer keep up with the times. When iOS8 (the current Apple operating system) came out in the fall of 2014, newer features such as AirPlay enhancement were not supported for the iPad2, and Mullen High School uses AirPlay for the classroom projectors. Most experts predict that the iPad2 won’t be supported at all when iOS9 rolls out this autumn (2015). As developers stop supporting iOS8, students with two different operating systems and potentially two different sets of apps will result in challenges in effective classroom instruction.

Therefore, Mullen will require the iPad Air2 (16 GB) as the minimum requirement for all Mullen students beginning in the 2015-16 school year. Anything newer is allowed (for example, the rumored iPad Pro or Plus this summer), but iPad Minis, even the latest, are not suitable for classroom use. As Mullen continues to enhance our technology, it is inevitable that all of us must continue to upgrade our devices, whether they are iPads, computers or smartphones.

We anticipate four months of notice will be helpful to you. Please let us know if this presents any extreme financial hardship for your family. We promise that we will take advantage of this newer technology and continue to provide a 21st Century education for our children.

If you have any technical questions, please email Mike McGuire.

Trouble Viewing Our Calendar? - Mullen High School uses Google Calendars to provide the community with dates and times of important events. The calendars are embedded into the website. If you are having trouble viewing the calendar you may need to update your web browser. Versions of Safari 5 and older, Internet Explorer 5 and older, Firefox 11 and older and any AOL browsers do not support the modern functionality of Google Enterprise. These must be updated. If you need help with the process please contact support@mullenhigh.com for assistance.

Attention Current AP Students - Current AP students must attend the AP Pre-Administration Session during the late-start on Wednesday, April 15th at 7:45 AM. This meeting is MANDATORY and will be held in the Rilko. AP Students must bring a No. 2 pencil and be in the Rilko no later than 7:45AM on Wed. April 15th.

ASPIRE ACT Exam Information - The standardized assessment for freshmen and sophomores will take place over two days. Part 1- Wednesday May 6th starting at 8:30 AM and Part 2- Friday May 15th following the Senior Induction mass. Please note: May 6th is a 2-hour late start for Juniors & Seniors. Freshman & Sophomores will begin the 1 hour test at 8:30 and continue into the regular late start school day.

Join The Drumline Crew! - Are you interested in joining Drumline next year? There will be a Drumline informational meeting Tuesday, April 14th from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Student Life Center for all students (and parents) who want to participate next school year. Please email Mr York with any questions.

Wednesday, April 1st One Hour Late Start -
There will be a one hour late start on Wednesday, April 1st. The warning bell will sound at 9:10 AM. Please plan accordingly.

ASPIRE ACT Test (previously Explore) for Freshmen & Sophomores - The standardized assessment for freshmen and sophomores will take place over two days. In previous years, the freshman and sophomores took the Explore and PLAN exams. ACT discontinued these two tests over the summer and replaced them with a new assessment called ASPIRE. As explained in the fall, due to a number of implementation problems on behalf of ACT, the new ASPIRE assessment was not available for freshman and sophomore testing on October 15, therefore we will administer the test in two parts this spring.

Service Hours Available - Looking for service hours opportunities? Check the availability on the service learning page. Seniors needing service hours can meet with Mr. Zickmund and Mrs. McCarty at 3 PM Tuesday, March 31st in the Lasallian Heritage Hall (200 Lobby) to sign up for preparing the community garden for spring planting.

Speech & Debate Update - Nine Mullen students competed on March 20th & 21st in Congress for a chance to represent Mullen and the Rocky Mountain South District of NFL (National Forensic League) in Dallas on June 13-21 at the National Tournament. For the 48th time Mullen will be represented at the national tournament. Freshman Gabriele Brown will be known as Senator Brown for the week. Senior Kristopher Watler is 1st alternate and senior Johnny Srsich is 2nd alternate in the House of Representatives. The team will compete again on April 10th & 11th in debate, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory and interpretation of Humorous literature for additional entries at nationals. That tournament may also allow Johnny and Kris to move into qualifying positions in the congress if those qualified in their houses make it in other events. Congratulations Mustangs! We are very proud of you! Good luck at districts.
