Mullen Cheer is rolling in local, state and regional competition, and early next year will be headed to the national level.

The Mustangs grabbed first place on Saturday in a National Cheerleaders Association Regional at Denver South. Also, at an earlier USA Regional at Legacy in Broomfield, the Mustangs took third place and received a bid to Nationals.

As well, there was a lower-half finish in the Centennial League, “the toughest in the state,” coach Emily Pickering said, followed by a UCA Regionals appearance at the National Western Complex in which they finished fourth and earned another Nationals bid.

Next up: the State Spirit Championships at the Denver Coliseum from Dec. 7-8.

The USA Spirit Nationals in Anaheim, Calif., will be in February.

“The girls are doing great, adapting really well to a new competition program that we’ve brought to Mullen,” Pickering said. “We’re looking to get back to where there were state champions.”

The team, she added, has embraced the change and new ideas as “they’re loving it. They have a big sense of family when it comes to team. They bring a great energy to every practice. And when we go to a competition, they’re very supportive of each other.”

The roster includes:  seniors Sadie Armijo, Jazlyn Rodriguez-Hernandez, Jordan Perez-Cordova and Emma Telgenhoff; juniors Alie Jones and Faith Spies; sophomores Vivian Higgins and Alex Krieger; and freshmen Marisol Avila, Cecelia Burnham, Ruby Cecenas, Madeline Crites, Natalie Jones, Aubryanne Leugers, Hannah Miller and Kylie Morgan.

Emily Pickering has taken over Mullen cheer.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “Actually, it’s an honor to be interviewed. I’m super-excited be a part of the program and to try and take it to the next level, like it used to be.”

Most recently at Jefferson County’s Standley Lake, where she was in command from 2012-16, Pickering also served as an assistant with the Gators. A co-ed team member at Barton County College in Great Bend, Kan., Pickering also was Level 5 with the Alpine All-Stars of Parker. A cheer member at Grandview in Aurora from 2004-07, Pickering’s injuries ultimately halted her participation.

“I blew out a knee,” Pickering said. “It wasn’t very fun.”

Severe ligament damage was the problem that also interrupted her college stay. She will be attending Metropolitan State in search of a degree in sports management. Her dream is to be involved with an NFL team and help make decisions such as choosing players in the draft, but maintains a passion to be involved with cheer and mentor young females at Mullen.

“They were always one of the teams to beat (in competition) and they have a great program and the expectations that they hold really attract me,” she said.

Plus, she added, Mullen’s appeal is real and its allure has taken hold for her. She said she’d like to stay with the Mustangs indefinitely.

“Long term?  Absolutely,” she said. “I was looking for a program I can grow with and be with for the long haul.

“And I’ve never felt so welcome and so supported so quickly.”
