Sadness and Resolve

The events at the STEM school in Highlands Ranch have me in prayer and reflection again. They have us as a community in confused wonder. My petition is for peace - peace for the families of the victims, peace for those affected by this event, peace for those touched by the fallout.

As an educator who has been teaching in Colorado for over the past 25  years, I could write thousands of words concerning how this profession has changed. I could write about curriculum and technology and the nature of teaching students in the 21st Century. I could note how these experiences are vastly different than they were when I started this vocation. But the reality is that the thing that has changed the most is the chilling acceptance of the normalcy of gun violence in schools. What a sadness this causes. Our reaction cannot be that these kinds of events are routine. We must be resolved to somehow put an end to them. We must be unified in this pursuit.

Here at school, we continue to consider these issues. We embrace our values and our students. We want them to feel at home, to feel comfortable, to feel safe. We also know our responsibilities to them and to you. We continue to work to make the campus as safe as possible. We are lucky to have Denver Police Officers on campus. We have dedicated resources to school security and student safety. We will continue these efforts - and improve them - in the future.

We are resolved to live in the light of hope, not in the darkness of fear.

Teacher Appreciation Week

I am incredibly grateful to the Mullen Parent Association and to Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Ruff for putting on a remarkable Teacher Appreciation Week this past week! We have an amazingly talented staff of Lasallian educators who are dedicated to your students and I feel so lucky to be here with them. They have - each of them - made a difference in the life of students at Mullen and five days of praising them is not enough… but it’s a start!

Mullen Host Family Needed for a Returning International Student

Host families play a vital role in the life of an international student. Studying at an American school is only part of an international student’s lifelong dream. Learning about American life and being a typical teenager in an American family is also very important to them. As you share in everyday life, you both will learn about each other’s values, traditions and customs. Would you like to embrace the opportunity to impact the life of our returning international student by sharing your life, family and home with them? Please read about our student who needs a loving host family in order to graduate as a Mustang in 2020.
