Distance Learning

Dear Students (and Families) -

I sincerely hope this letter finds you very well. Each time we have gathered to talk about this unprecedented situation, a teacher or staff member reminds us about you, our students, and that all the work we do is for you. Our prayers - the prayers of the faculty and staff of Mullen High School - are with you and will remain with you for the duration of this truly amazing time. 

Please pray for us as well.
This letter is to inform you of our initial plans for Distance Learning. Though we currently plan to return to school on Monday, April 20, 2020, that expectation could change at any time and is subject to mandates by local and federal authorities.  For now, we will continue to do our very best for you as we move into Distance Learning.

Distance Learning begins Wednesday, March 25, 2020. 

How you have functioned as students and your teachers have functioned as your instructors is going to significantly change for the foreseeable future. Here is what you can expect as we begin:

Distance Learning Syllabus Day, Wednesday 3.25.2020
  • Teachers will share an amended syllabus reflecting changes for Distance Learning.
  • Teachers will post on the platforms they are currently using (Edmodo, MyMullen, Google Classroom, etc.)
  • Students should check those platforms beginning Wednesday and daily thereafter for class material, course work and the like. 
Asynchronous Learning
  • Your classes will not meet at the times they did during the school day.
  • Students are not expected to be “in class” during previously established class periods.
 Assignments and Deadlines
  • It is your responsibility to check the platforms and be current with your classwork. 
  • Your teachers will post your class assignments in one of two ways:
    • Weekly
      • If teachers post weekly, all assignments for the week will be posted by 8:00am on the first day of the week.
    • Daily
      • If teachers post daily, assignments will be posted daily by 8:00am.
    • Long term assignments (papers, labs, projects, etc.) will be posted well in advance of due dates and reminders will be given to students;  however, you are responsible to keep track of your assignments.
  • Students should anticipate two graded assignments per class per week.
  • Gradebook weights and assignments that were established at the beginning of the third trimester may be adjusted. Please check with your teacher.
Daily Assignments
  • Students should expect to engage in class/assignments/homework 45 - 60 minutes per class per day. You should expect to focus on each of your five classes to up to an hour per class each day.
  • These 60 minutes are made up of daily instruction plus follow up assignment(s).
    • Assignments may  include:
      • lectures,
      • videos,
      • reading assignments,
      • checks for understanding, 
      • practice,
      • etc.
  • Students will have 24 hours to complete most assignments. However, be sure to pay attention to your teachers’ expectations for when assignments are due.  Classwork as well as homework are not optional. You must complete all assignments.
  • If you are having trouble with expectations, please be certain to email your teacher or counselor.
Office Hours
  • Your teachers will hold Office Hours at least 3 times a week.
    • Office Hours are for 30 - 60 minutes.
    • Office Hours may be held via
      • Zoom,
      • Google Hangouts,
      • or email.
    • Please pay attention to your teachers’ directions for these.

What you are about to do and what your teachers are about to do, we have not been trained to do - any of us - and, though we at Mullen have been talking about this and thinking about it for some time, the adventure on which we are about to embark will pose some challenges, to be sure. However, it also provides us many opportunities which I hope are exciting. 

Since the faculty first started talking about the possibility of closing for an extended period of time and started to consider Distance Learning, we have been asking the following questions: What is truly essential this trimester? What do students need to master? How will we deliver that content and those experiences?

Now, I am asking a favor from you: I need to ask the following questions: How can I continue to learn this trimester? How will I stay on top of my work? Can I find a space in my home that will be good for me for Distance Learning? How can I engage with the content of my classes and with my teachers?  

We will adapt, change and grow with realities that confront us in the weeks ahead. We will be communicative about potential alterations to how we “do” Distance Learning. Very soon we are going to get input from you, the students, and from your teachers and we will make this the best possible situation we can.

After the first week or so of Distance Learning, the school will send a survey to both students and teachers to see how things are going and we will make changes if we need to; I promise you all that. Your opinions on these surveys when they come out will be very important.

As for other events that we are looking forward to this year, I will communicate with everyone as soon as I have answers on those things. 

We are Mullen, everyone. We ALL are Mullen. We are STILL Mullen.
