Mullen earns its second cinsecutive victory by blowout; team is 8-1-1.
GREENWOOD VILLAGE – It was their second consecutive victory by blowout.

Class 4A Mullen drubbed host 5A Overland 9-0 on Tuesday night at the Stutler Bowl in a Centennial League match. It was a day after wiping out 3A Manitou Springs 8-0.

Now 8-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in league, the Mustangs pronounced themselves ready for what will be their third match in four days, against regular contender Arapahoe at home on Thursday, 4:30 p.m.

It also should give them some sort of gauge concerning their abilities.

“We like our chances,” Mustangs head coach Matthew Guglielmo said, noting his team’s gradual improvement and confidence. “This is one of the best teams, maybe the best team in some ways, I’ve coached here.

“I think we can play (with the Warriors, who dropped a late 1-0 decision to host Cherry Creek in the first match Tuesday) even though we didn’t get a win against (Cherry)
Creek (a 1-1 tie), even though we didn’t get a win against (Cherokee) Trail (a 3-2 loss), but I think we’re among the league’s elite this year. We can get a win, but it’s going to be hard.”

Alexandra Deorio led Tuesday’s effort with three goals and an assist, and, yes, she and her teammates have been looking forward to Thursday.

“I think this has been really good practice for us heading into Arapahoe,” the senior said. “Hopefully, everyone will come out ready.”

On a four-match roll and having upped its season goal total to 55, seventh in 4A, Mullen also received goals from Macy Clem, Lauren Creighton, Jaime DeBerardinis, Jade Garcia, Kaylah Wanna and Julianna Zinis.

The Mustangs will need their size, strength, ball-handling skills and grit to take on the Warriors, Guglielmo said.

“There’s always a purpose with (the Warriors) and that makes them that much more dangerous,” the coach said. “We’re going to have to work to get the “W.’”

Said Deorio: “I think we have a good chance. Each game we’re improving.”
