Mustangs take 2nd match in a row to start season

Mullen takes down the Denver Prep League's George Washington 5-1
They are looking good, although there have been only two matches and lots of improvement will be needed if they want to play deep into May.

So, yes, the Mullen Mustangs enjoyed their 5-1 decision of visiting George Washington on Tuesday in Class 4A nonleague, but, no, they are not anywhere near where they could be once everything settles.

“We played well in spurts,” Mustangs head coach Matthew Guglielmo said. “We haven’t been consistent, which is why I’m not pleased with this game or the first game … you can talk about weather, or reserves playing, but it’s my job to get them together.”

Still, Mullen moved to 2-0 in the first steps of 2019 with an aggregate count of 11 goals. Last year’s team took four games to reach that total.

“It’s early,” Guglielmo said, “but we need to rise our game.”

One of the Mustangs doing just that is sophomore Anna Seaman, who scored twice, but also took the stance of her coach.

“We’re doing pretty good and it’s looking like a good season so far, but it’s early and we haven’t had that many practices,” she said. “So we can get better. We have potential and people joining this year (Jaime DeBerardinis and Macy Clem, who came over from academy play) who weren’t here last year ... them coming out really helps us out. We haven’t even had a full week of practice yet, but it’s looking good.”

Captain Kaylah Wanna also scored twice for the Mustangs and DeBerardinis opened the match with a goal, in the 13th minute. Clem, DeBerardinis, Katy DeNezza, Alexandra Deorio and Wanna had assists.

The Mustangs also peppered the Patriots (0-2) with 24 shots and GW could only respond with six against keeper Emma Ryan.

“This team is going to take a deep, deep run in the (4A) tournament,” Guglielmo said. “I just need to have that process happen faster and more efficiently. I’m not that patient.”

Mullen will be back at it on Thursday, March 21, at home against 5A Lakewood, 4:30 p.m.
