Mustangs seeded 23rd in 4A regionals

They’re in, so now the fun begins.
Mullen advanced to the Class 4A softball regionals that were released on Monday.
The Mustangs, who finished the regular season 8-14, are seeded No. 23. They are in Region 7, hosted by Erie. Mullen will take on Wheat Ridge at 10 a.m., the same time the host Tigers will face Discovery Canyon. Winners of the two games will play for the region’s champion spot, one of two berths into the 4A state tournament.
“We’re in, yeah,” first-year head coach Alan Colglazier said. “We have the worst record in regionals, but it’s not indicative of how we played.”
His team’s schedule included the Erie tournament, another in Oklahoma and the 5A-based Centennial League.
“And this is how our schedule has groomed us for this,” he said.
In winning their final four games of the regular season, Mullen rallied and righted itself, also through improved play as well as making a few changes in positioning. Maggie Bertsch has proven strong; Tiffanie Brieno has hit the ball well all season and been steady at third base; Avery Panazzo has taken over at catcher; and Bella Sevier has helped in moving to left field.
“We can’t give away extra outs,” Colglazier said. “We need to play some good defense. If we can, we’ll be just fine.”
Offensively, the Mustangs also have improved and the coach said “we’re hitting the ball pretty well. We won’t see pitching in our regional like we have all year long.
“This is what you play for.”
