Mustangs 10-run-rule Horizon
Mullen tames hawks 13-3 in nonleague.
It’s a process for Mullen softball and right now the process is good.
The Mustangs won their third game in a row on Tuesday, a 13-3, 6-inning decision over visiting Horizon in Class 5A. They improved to 4-5 before heading out of state for a tournament and may be turning a corner with a group that has only one senior and four juniors.
“Well, we’re gradually getting there,” head coach Alan Colglazier said. ”We made some bonehead mistakes, obviously, but kids are kids and we’re still in the growing stages. But we’re getting better.”
Mullen salvaged Erie Tournament victories over the weekend against Ralston Valley and Mustang, Okla., over the weekend heading into Tuesday and plated runs in five of the six innings, five runs in its final at-bat. Marissa Sanchez drove home three runs as did Margaret Bertsch. Bella Hawkins and Avery Panazzo each added two.
Actually, the Mustangs had opportunities for more, but, as Colglazier pointed out, “our hands were just too slow today. But we’re starting to compete a little. We need to shore up some mistakes here and there, and as long as they put forth a good effort, I’m OK with that.”
Sanchez went the distance, pitched out of trouble and had some success with a changeup.
“It was a good game, but I think we had a couple things we can clean up,” she said. “In the end, it worked out.”
The Mustangs will leave early Thursday morning for Bixby, Okla., and Colglazier called it “a nice complex with very tough softball. We will not be fully loaded with some girls not going, but it will be a learning experience, a team-bonding-type of thing.”
Upon returning, Mullen will have a nonleaguer on Sept. 10 at Fairview in Boulder, pick up a suspended game at Holy Family on Sept. 15, then begin Centennial League play on Sept. 20 at home against Cherry Creek as its testing schedule continues.
“If we’re going to be the best, we have to play the best and beat the best,” Colglazier said. “And we have to continue to work hard.”
