Ondekane set for surgery on Friday

Dunk in summer league leads to torn tendon on ring finger.
Not-so-great news for Mullen boys basketball -- senior-to-be and strongman Isaac Ondekane is slated for surgery on Friday.

The 6-foot-8 forward-center from The Congo was injured Saturday in a summer game at the University of Denver. Ondekane went up for a dunk, Mustangs head coach Bob Caton said, and caught the ring finger on his right hand on the rim.

As a result, he tore the tendon off the bone.

“It’s too bad,” Caton said. “He was looking good.”

Ondekane is looking at being sidelined for as long as 16 weeks and will miss a key recruiting period.

“This is a bad time for an injury,” Caton said. “This is when the recruiters get to see you.”

However, Ondekane, who averaged 13.2 points, 12.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots during the 2018-19 season, is expected to be ready for the opening of winter practice.

“He has some work to do and we expect he’ll be ready by October,” Caton said.
