Mustangs win by 60 at Smoky

14 players score.
AURORA – On Friday night, Mullen superseded its victory total from a season ago and won by 60 points.
Plus, the Mustangs lost by 45 points to Grandview on Wednesday, so, yes, there was a lot to like about their 80-20 road victory at Smoky Hill in the Centennial League.
In moving to 9-6 overall, 4-2 in league and a game from completing the first go-round of the Centennial’s home-and-away slate, Mullen’s first real laugher was welcomed.
All 14 players scored, the starters didn’t see much floor time and the usual reserves enjoyed extended action.
“This was a good game for us,” Mustangs head coach Frank Cawley said. “We got to see what all of the kids can do. I do have confidence in them and now will try to fill their rolls. This was great for us.”
Abby Webster concurred. The sophomore was the last Mustang into the game and led the team with 12 points, the only player to attain double figures.
“It was really fun just to see everyone have a chance to play,” said Webster, who scored 10 of her points in the third quarter. “Even the starters were having a lot of fun on the bench cheering. I think we all enjoyed it.”
This one was over early as the Buffaloes, now 2-13 and 0-6, continue to try and battle through a tough time for the program and reloading under head coach Rick Harris. Mullen did whatever it wanted and breezed.
The Mustangs were 8-15 a season ago and so much more awaits them.
“I have a feeling there will be a few more,” Cawley said when acknowledging his team’s victory total. “All of those kids (who got into the game) are going to need to step up for us, no question. And we’re just getting a better idea of what they’re all about and what they can do. We’re going to need them.”
Webster, who had not scored this season, said the team compares itself to 2017-18 “sometimes, but I think we’re obviously way better than last year. Last year was a learning thing for us.”
