'Stangs down Chatfiueld for a 2nd tme, 80-60.
For the second consecutive season, Mullen boys basketball earned an opening-round playoff victory.
The Mustangs rolled Jefferson County’s Chatfield for a second time in 2018-19. On Wednesday night, they an 80-60 decision at Hutchison Fieldhouse.
Mullen had beaten the Chargers 91-68 in its Christmas tournament on Dec. 22.
A year ago, the Mustangs opened the playoffs with a 65-38 victory at Fossil Ridge in Fort Collins.
In improving to 15-9, the Mustangs advanced to the second round. On Saturday, they will be in Castle Rock to meet Castle View of the Continental League. Tip-off will be at 5 p.m.
With junior strongman and 6-foot-8 Isaac Ondekane sidelined with an illness, the Mustangs took a bit to pull away from the Chargers, but did so behind balanced scoring. Junior Isaac White led the team with 17 points. He had lots of help as Matt Veen added 16, including three dunks and a wave of rebounds. Senior Christian Davis, who scored 55 in the previous Chatfield meeting, added 14 and Brady Parris contributed 11.
The Mustangs continue on their best record since going 17-9 in 2007-08. They are 26-23 with Bob Caton as head coach after going an aggregate 81-158 the previous 10 seasons under three others.
