Icemen beat Coronado, await playoff fate.
LITTLETON – In capping its regular season, Mullen earned a shutout victory on Thursday.
The host Mustangs blanked Colorado Springs’ Coronado 4-0 in nonconference play at The Edge. The Mustangs are 10-7-2 and await their playoff fate. The 24-team postseason bracket is due to be released on Sunday.
Mullen had already secured its first winning record since the 2012-13 season and has its most victories since that season. The Mustangs were 10-9-1 seven seasons ago. And it has been a good turnaround -- they were 1-18 in 2016-17.
In jumping on the Cougars (4-12-3) almost immediately, Robbie Witwer scored 1 minute, 28 seconds into it with assists from John Baird and Amos Mills. The lead grew to 2-0 late in the period, at 13:34, on a score by Hunter Kear from Ashton Smaldone.
The Mustangs’ Utah Bryant scored a quickie, just 9 seconds into the second period, to make it 3-0 on assists from Baird and Witwer, and Smaldone capped the scoring with a late goal from Truman Boettiger and Nick Gilbert.
All of the balanced scoring came while at even strength.
In goal, Mullen’s regular Connor Mahon teamed with Dominic Maurais for the shutout.
Mullen outshot Coronado 44-40 and its defense was strong in killing five power-play opportunities. The Mustangs never got a chance with player advantage as the Cougars were not whistled for an infraciion.
