Heritage shuts out Mustangs

Eagles win 3-0.
Three games in three days produced a 1-1-1 showing.
Mullen won’t complain.
The Mustangs, who had a tie, a shutout victory and a shutout loss over the weekend, were handled by Heritage 3-0 on Saturday at South Suburban Ice Arena. The Highlands Conference loss put them at 3-6-1 and 9-7-2 overall.
The Eagles are 11-5-2 and 7-1 in the Highlands, three points behind Denver East, and have won five games in a row.
“That’s a very good team,” Mustangs head coach Devon Brady said. “They have nine seniors. Two years (Mullen has mostly sophomores and only two seniors) make a big difference in development.”
Plus, he said, “the tank was pretty low today and we kind of expected that.”
The Mustangs stayed within range and permitted only a goal in each period as junior Connor Mahon was mainly responsible for keeping it close with a variety of testing saves – they were outshot 28-13 -- but generating offense remained a problem, particularly with player advantage. They were 0-of-7 on the power play.
“That has been our Achilles’ heel all year and we’re still trying to figure it out,” Brady said.
However, Mullen was 24th in seeding and occupying the final postseason spot entering their recent three-game stretch and Brady said its fortunes probably improved with one game to play, a “must-win” in nonleague against Coronado on Thursday at The Edge.
“Against Kent Denver, Heritage and Denver East, I said we would need one win and we’re going to end up 1-4-1, so we came out ahead,” Brady said. “I think we’re in a good spot. And we’re only two years from going 1-18.”
