2-2 tie in OT.
COLORADO SPRINGS – Weather problems have wreaked havoc recently with Mullen’s sports schedule the Mustangs ice hockey team played its first of three games over three days late Thursday night.
In an 8:35 p.m. starting time, the Mustangs gave up a third-period goal and had to settle for a 2-2 tie in overtime in nonconference at World Arena. The game was played despite Mullen having a snow day.
The Mustangs are 8-6-2 and attempting to fight through a 0-3-2 skid. Their last victory was on Jan. 19. Rampart is 8-5-3.
Mullen failed to hold two leads. Utah Bryant gave it a 1-0 edge 3:17 into the first period before the Rams leveled it at 1 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the period.
Alex Hertlein gave the Mustangs their second lead 5:25 into the second, although Rampart again responded, scoring at 6:59 of the third.
Neither team could do much on the power play – the Mustangs were 1-of-6; the Rams 1-of-5 – and Rampart outshot Mullen 37-32, including 14-8 in the third and 5-1 in OT.
Mustangs goalie Connor Mahon continued his solid play, and Robert Witwer and Ashton Smaldone contributed assists.
Mullen is staring at two Highlands Conference road games – on Friday, 7 p.m., vs. Kent Denver at the University of Denver, and Saturday, 6:30 p.m., against Heritage at South Suburban.
