Mullen enjoys mountain sweep

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Mustangs handle Summit and Steamboat Springs.
There may be something to this mountain ice hockey thing for Mullen … at least, there was over the weekend.
The Mustangs, in improving to 8-3, won twice on a mountain road trip – 5-1 at Summit on Friday and 3-1 at Steamboat Springs.
Both nonconference victories were welcomed as the Mustangs weren’t sharp in losing on Thursday to undefeated Doherty at home.
Against Summit, Riley Watters scored twice and Utah Bryant, Amos Mills and Robby Witwer added goals. Larry Simmons was credited with two assists and Witwer, Eoin Canavan, John Witwer, John Baird and Ben McManus contributed helpers.
The Mustangs were outshot 23-22, but junior goalie Connor Mahon allowed only the one score for the Tigers.
As for the victory over the Sailors, the Mustangs scored in each period. In order, the goals were by Hunter Kear, Watters and Mills. Nick Gilbert (two), Ashton Smaldone and Canavan had assists.
Mahon again allowed just one goal.
The Mustangs will resume play next weekend, Jan 25-26, with Highlands Conference games at home at The Edge. They will host Heritage on Friday, 8:30 p.m., followed by Kent Denver on Saturday, 6:15 p.m.
