Beat Chatfield 6-2.
LITTLETON – Robby Witwer scored twice in the third period on Saturday note as Mullen broke open a scoreless tie for a 3-1 victory over Chatfield at The Edge.
The Mustangs moved to 6-2 overall, 2-2 in the Highlands Conference. Chatfield is 2-7-2, 0-5.
It was the second consecutive game for the Mustangs against the Chargers – they also played a week ago, on Jan. 5, with Mullen winning 2-1 in the opener to the scheduling quirk.
The game had been scoreless through two periods despite the fact that the Mustangs had outshot the Chargers 33-16, including 22-8 in the first period.
However, Witwer, John Baird and Utah Bryant would connect for three scores.
First, Witwer scored at 6:16 of the final period off assists from Baird and Bryant. Bryant upped it to 2-0 at 13:31 on an assist from Baird. And Witwer added his second score on an assist from Bryant.
All three goals came at even strength.
Chatfield finally got one past Mustangs junior goalie Hunter Mahon inside the final 2 minutes of the game.
The Mustangs will have three consecutive nonconference games this week. On Thursday, Jan. 19, they will be home against Colorado Springs’ Doherty at The Edge, a matinee at 2:30 p.m. It will be followed by a trip to the mountains for a Friday matchup against Summit, 6:30 p.m., and Saturday at Steamboat Springs, 4:30 p.m.
