Mustangs split DH at Overland

Mullen split a doubleheader on Saturday at Overland in Aurora.

Competing at Tony Schenbeck Field at Utah Park, the Mustangs won the first game 12-5 and dropped the second 8-6.

The Centennial League split put the Mustangs at 12-9 overall, 6-7 in league, ads there are just two days remaining in the regular season.

In the opener, senior left-hander Will Miller went the distance. He allowed only six hits and walked only one in giving up five runs, but he struck out eight and stayed in command.

Offensively, Mullen trailed twice early, but plated three runs in each of the middle three innings. Cameron Brickley and Evan Malloy each drove in three runs. Malloy also had a home run and Brickley tripled. Michael Brady, Brennen Nolte, Stephan Loya and Malloy had doubles. Jack Vitry scored three times. Brickley and Nolte each had three of Mullen’s 18 hits.

In the second game, Overland (3-19, 1-13) plated two runs in the seventh to win it.

Both teams banged out 12 hits.

For Mullen, Nolte had two hits for three RBIs. Vitry tripled among his two hits, scored twice and had an RBI, and Loya had two doubles. Malloy and Nicki Perri also had doubles. Malloy added two hits as did Michael Stanford.

On the mound, Alek Elges, Wyatt Reynolds and Stanford combined to allow eight runs, seven earned, and struck out eight.

The Mustangs will take on Highlands Ranch at home at Bill Swift Field in nonleague on Monday, 4:15 p.m., then complete their regular season will a road game in Aurora at Cherokee Trail, 4:15 p.m., in league.

Regional pairings are to be released on Wednesday.
