Regis Jesuit knocks down Mustangs

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Raiders win 13-1.
They longed to play well, they were flying high coming into Monday and their opponent was their longtime parochial-school rival that also is sitting near the top of the class.

However, the result was lopsided, they weren’t able to do much and there was no argument that they got waxed.

So what do the Mullen Mustangs do after a 13-1 home drubbing in five innings to Regis Jesuit at Bill Swift Field”

“You flush it and go,” Mustangs head coach Nick Arcuri said.

He pointed to two road matchups this week, Tuesday at Cherokee Trail and Saturday at Arapahoe, “when we have a chance to be 5-2 in (the Centennial) League.”

The Class 5A nonleague loss dropped Mullen to 8-4 overall and it was one in which not a lot went right. The Raiders, now 11-1 and with more than a half-dozen signees and commitments with others on the way, battered three Mustangs pitchers for 16 hits, scored in every inning, and belted three home runs, two of them no-doubters. They also took advantage of six walks, three wild pitches and three walks.

“It was tough,” Mullen senior catcher Brennen Nolte said, while icing a shoulder and hand that were beaten up from a challenging day behind the plate.

At the plate, Mullen had only one hit, by No. 2 hitter and starting pitcher Alek Elges. It was basically a swinging bunt. Raiders starter Alec Willis plunked the Mustangs’ Evan Malloy two batters later, then retired the ensuing 10 in succession. He struck out seven and walked none. Mullen’s only other base runner came via walk in the fifth against Raiders reliever Whitman Hamilton.

“This one didn’t mean that much,” Arcuri said, noting he had toyed with his pitching rotation with an eye toward matching up in league play. “We didn’t have the best approaches (at the plate) today. We didn’t do a lot of things well today. I don’t know if they got caught up in all of the type of this thing.”

The Mustangs and the Raiders met for the first time in the rivalry since March 31, 2010, when Regis Jesuit won 10-8. Plus, Mullen students in attendance were treated to free pizza.

“We just move on,” Arcuri said. “We’re fine, we’re good. We have t be ready to go (Tuesday).”
