Mustangs fall late to Bruins again

Cherry Creek wins 8-7.
GREENWOOD VILLAGE – For the second consecutive meeting and over three days, Mullen couldn’t hold a lead against Cherry Creek.

On Tuesday, the host Mustangs at Bill Swift Field led the Bruins 9-7 entering the seventh inning only to surrender an epic, wild, 16-hit, 16-run inning to lose 23-9 at home.

On Thursday at Cherry Creek’s Tom McCollum Field, Mullen again led the Bruins 7-6, but were touched for two runs in an 8-7 walk-off loss.
Mullen is now 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial. The Bruins are 5-4, 2-0.

Once again, the Mustangs had enough offense to win and the contributions occurred throughout their batting order. They had 12 hits. Alek Elges, Cameron Brickley, Nick Perri, Evan Malloy and Jack Vitry each had two. Trevor More and A.J. Naha also hit safely. Malloy and Vitry each doubled twice and Malloy had three runs batted in. One of Brickley’s safeties was a triple and he drove home two. Brennen Nolte added an RBI and Vitry scored three times.

However, Mullen stranded nine runners and there were issues on the mound. Junior and starter Matthew Tafoya, in 4.1 innings, was tagged for six runs, five earned, along with eight hits and five walks. Senior Jayden Mayoral took another loss, this one in 1.2 innings in allowing five hits and a walk.

The Mustangs will be back at it on Saturday at Eaglecrest, first pitch at 11 a.m.
