Mustangs roll Overland

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Director
Mullen wins 13-0 in league on the road.
AURORA – The learning experience for first-year head coach Matt Cawley and a young, under-manned team continued on Friday.

And the Mustangs got the lesson – they took on another team they should beat handily and they did.

Mullen blanked host Overland 13-0 in the Centennial League to cap a four-match week. And after handling Smoky Hill on Thursday 5-0, the
Mustangs are 5-7 overall and have levelled their league mark at 3-3.

Overland is 1-11, 0-6.

“When we play a team like this,” Cawley said, “it’s good because some of the guys who maybe don’t see the same minutes get some time in real-game situations.”

Overall, he added, “we kept the game exactly how we wanted to, on our side of the field and that’s the biggest thing for us. The guys did the right thing today and worked through all of our offense and that was huge.”

Particularly huge was sophomore Jackson Tate, who deposited two goals and had four assists.

“I think we’re playing more complete games as the season goes on,” he said.

And he had lots of help. Eight Mustangs scored with Brandon Hane and Keegan Quinn each tallying three goals.

Tate acknowledged that a younger team also missing its top scorers, Jack Berger and J.P. Starkey, “just has to play better.”

The Mustangs came into the match 28th in RPI qualifying and 16 will advance to the playoff bracket. While it appears to be a reach for Mullen to qualify, it may not be, Cawley said.

“We want to finish strong,” he said. “We’re not mathematically out of the equation. We steal a couple of wins that people don’t think we can win and we may have a shot at the dance.”

The regular season ends a week from Saturday, on May 4. The Mustangs have three games to play – Monday at Rock Canyon, Wednesday home against Colorado Academy and Friday home vs. Eaglecrest.

However, another storm and batch of inclement weather is due Monday to Wednesday.

And another batch of adversity is there for Mullen.

“Now, we have to go fight for it,” Cawley said.
