A no-go in the snow

Second round of 4A golf cancelled; freshman Choi earns second place.

Mullen head coach Ashley Tait, one of two previous three-time medalists, poses with Holy Family's Hailey Schalk, who became a three-time winnr on Tuesday after Round 2 of Class 4A at Pelican Lakes G.C. was cancelled.

It didn’t happen, of course. The second round of the Colorado tournament on Tuesday for all three classifications of girls golf wasn’t played due to one of the better snowstorms in late May that anyone can remember.

Hence, first-round scores on Monday served as final results. For Mullen freshman Sofia Choi in Class 4A at Pelican Lakes G.C. in Windsor, it was a state runner-up finish. For Mustangs junior Paige Sowitch, it was a tie for 51st.

And for everyone else, it was a fitting end to a spring season that came with all sorts of weather problems as well as last month’s two-day lockdown – and shutdown of sports -- near the 20-year anniversary of the Columbine Massacre.

Plus, officials had blocked off three days in anticipation of additional weather problems, but all three sites – 5A was in Fort Collins and 3A in Eagle – were deemed unplayable through at least Wednesday.

As well, Mullen head coach Ashley Tait had her cell phone stop working from the cold temperatures and wet conditions.

Officially, Choi ended with a 77 and Sowitch a 105. Choi also ended five shots back of winner Hailey Schalk of Holy Family, the winner with an even-par 72. It also was the third individual medalist showing for Schalk, who won the past two in 3A before joining 4A. There have only been two other three-timers – Lynn Ann Moretto of Cherry Creek and Tait, a Mullen alumnus – and Schalk will be going for an unprecedented fourth in 2020.
For teams, Windsor won a second consecutive 4A title at plus-38 and Niwot was second at plus-58.

Concerning next season, Mullen will lose three seniors from its nine-player roster.

And everyone hopes next season will come with significantly better weather … but they aren’t counting on it.
