First match, first win

Frosh shoots 31 on executiv course in 1st match for the Mustangs.
In her first schoolgirl competition, Sofia Choi was a winner.

The Mullen freshman won a tournament on Wednesday created by her coach Ashley Tait, the MAC tri-Match held at Foothills Golf Course’s executive 9.

The small field also included Arapahoe and Columbine.

Choi shot even-par 31 to win by three shots.

“We’ve been working a little on her ball-striking, which was good,” Tait said of an early portion of the season that once again has been difficult to get in any work. “The speed of the greens also was tough, but she played well.”

Arapahoe won the team chase with 103. Mullen was next with 131 and Columbine had 137.

Individually for the Mustangs, Paige Sowitch added 49 and Meagan Compton had 51.

Choi is an accomplished player here and nationally, and Tait, herself a three-time Colorado medalist as a Mustang, is certain Wednesday was only the beginning of high-end finishes.

“She could win a lot more this year,” Tait said.
