Returning talent means state or bust.
A year ago, Mullen girls lacrosse missed its opportunity to make the Colorado playoff bracket.

This year’s version isn’t interested in it happening again.

“The expectation is that we will make state this year,” second-year Mustangs head coach Melynda Brown. “With the talent we have and the hard work
we’ll put in throughout the season, we have to capitalize.”

In 2018, the Mustangs were 8-7 overall, 4-3 in the Centennial League. They lose four players from the group, but a lot of power returns.
Emerson Johnson; Elise Bialecki, Molly Gilbert and goalie Izzy Cisneros head the high end of the team’s core. The defense should be strong “with some good lacrosse minds,” Brown said, and she and her staff will be developing a couple of talent freshmen.

As usual, Mullen’s schedule, including matches against Denver East and defending state champion Colorado Academy early, will be strong. And a spring break trip late in March will involve games versus California’s Canyon Crest Academy and Cathedral Catholic.

Brown said the Mustangs were struggling with weather problems in opening days that negated outside practice, “but we have to make the opportunities in front of us work.”
