MBN Roundup: Track and field

Track and field usually suffers from inclement weather as much as any spring sport and this year has been no exception.

Add in the injury and precaution factors as well as new coaches for both Mullen boys and girls teams, and conflicts with events such as prom, and it
has been an interesting season with about three weeks to go.

Last weekend, Mullen had light representation at the Liberty Bell Invitational, one of the top stops on the circuit.

On Saturday, the one highlight was freshman Agur Dwol going 36 feet, three-quarter-inch in the triple jump to take second place.

As for Friday, the Mustangs competed in the Holy War that also included Denver Christian, Holy Family, Lutheran, Regis Jesuit, Resurrection Christian and Valor Christian.

The Mustangs boys were fifth with 80.50 points – Lutheran won with 212 – and the girls seventh – Valor won with 296.50.

The boys were topped by a couple of firsts. Senior Matt Veen won the high jump in 6-2.50 and Michael Dudzic grabbed first in the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes, 48.57 seconds.

Also, junior Aidan Keanaaina was second in shot put, 46-10.5; Cooper Williamson was second in pole vault, 9-3; and freshman Rocco DePIzzol was fifth in the long jump, 20-4.75.

In relays, Mullen’s 400 team was second in 44.87; and the 800 (1:37.90) and 3,200 (9:11.48) groups were third.

For girls, senior Cassandra Pine was third in shot put, 35-5, and fifth in discus, 97-2.

Rebecca Brazelton was fifth in the triple jump, 32-3.
