MBN Roundup: Spring sports

By The MBN
Baseball, girls golf, and boys and girls lacrosse.
It was a very active Monday for Mullen spring sports.

Behind emerging freshman Sofia Choi, Mustangs golfers competed in the Willie DiLoreto Memorial Invitational at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster.

In a field hosted by Northglenn, Choi shot 4-over-par 75 that included a birdie on the par-5 No. 16 to finish runner-up. She now has finished first, first and second in her three prep tournaments.

Choi’s round featured even-par 36 on the back side. And her score was four shots off the pace set by Loveland senior Lauren Lehigh.

Teamwise, the Mustangs were 14th (plus-69) in the layout that had representation from 28 schools. Fairview, Boulder and Legacy each shot even par.
According to Mullen head coach Ashley Tait, “it was a tough course. Course management and club selection were very important and the greens were fast and undulating.”

The Mustangs are scheduled for their second Centennial League match on Wednesday at Aurora Hills G.C. They won the first one, last week at
Meadow Hills G.C.

In baseball, Mullen earned a late 5-4 Class 5A nonleague decision of Fossil Ridge in Fort Collins.

Senior Brennen Nolte had a home run and Alek Elges, Evan Malloy, Trevor Moore and Jack Vitry contributed doubles. Nolte had two runs batted in, and Malloy (who had two hits) and Moore each had one. Nolte also scored twice.

On the mound, Wyatt Reynolds earned the victory in relief. Senior Will Miller started and Michael Stanford also had an inning in relief.

Mullen is 5-4 with a ruling to be announced on a possible pitch-count violation from Saturday’s Centennial League loss on Saturday to Eaglecrest.

The Mustangs will host the Raptors on Tuesday, 4 p.m.

In boys lacrosse, the Mustangs dropped a 20-10 match to host ThunderRidge in Highlands Ranch.

Mullen fell to 1-4 on the season.

The Grizzlies led 10-9 at halftime and held the Mustangs scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Eaglecrest is scheduled to visit the Mustangs on Wednesday, 6 p.m., in league play.

As for girls lacrosse, the Mustangs dropped a tight 13-12 nonleague decision at Denver East.

Emerson Johnson led Mullen (3-5) with four goals. Grace Archibald had three, Molly Gilbert and Haley Vanek had two, and Elise Bialecki had one. Archibald, Gilbert and Vanek had assists.

The Mustangs will be at Eaglecrest on Wednesday, 4:20 p.m., in league play.
