Freeman, Chavez head Centennial charge

Duo heads league charge.
CENTENNIAL – Mullen boys swimming and diving finished sixth of seven teams in the Centennial League ‘A’ Championships on Saturday at Arapahoe, but the Mustangs quality again was noticeable.

Without a lot of depth, Mullen managed to grab a coule of firsts as well as several placings and were led by Ben Freeman and Will Chavez.

Individually, Freeman won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 42.38 seconds, and was third in the 50 free (22.17).

Chavez won the 100 free (47.25) and was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:00.59);

Camron Smooke was third in the 100 backstroke (55.26) and Charlie Baker fifth in the 500 free (5:04.94).

For relays, Chavez, Smooke, Baker and Freeman were third (3:14.69) in the 400 free relay; Freeman,  Smooke, Noah Maestas and Chavez were fourth (1:29.09) in the 200 free relay; and Will Olivieri, Maestas, Baker and Jonathon Krza sixth (1:46.60) in the 200 medley relay.

Teamwise, Mullen scored 421 points. Cherry Creek won with 943. Host Arapahoe was second at 909.

The Mustangs will head to the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center Friday-Saturday for the 4A state championships.
