By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Mullen (2-over) is 2nd to defending 4A champ Montrose.
For starters, Mullen boys golfers can’t complain.

The Mustangs finished second in the Cherry Creek Invitational on Tuesday. Competing at Buffalo Run Golf Course in CommerceCity, they were runners-up at 2-over-par 218.

And “awesome day for Mullen boys golf” is how head coach Jerry Koehler described it.

Rhett Johnson was tops for the Mustangs at 2-over 74, a tie for third. The junior’s round certainly was interesting, notably with seven birdies (four on the front nine) and a triple bogey on the par-4 No. 9.. He went 36-34.

Juniors Mario Dino (36-38--74) and Cole Reister (34-40--74) tied for 10th to account for the team scoring.. Senior Eli Marquez wasn’t far behind, 37-38—75, tied for 16th.

Defending Class 4A state champion Montrose won in a walk, ending at minus-10 and headed by medalist Jordan Jennings (5-under 67). The Indian
also had the runner-up, Ryan Lords, minus-4, and a tie for fifth by defending state champion Micah Strangebye (1-under 71)..

Mullen will begin Centennial League play on Thursday, Aug. 15, at Meadow Hills G.C. in Aurora. First tee shots will be at 11 a.m.
