To date early in 2019, the Mustangs have entered three matches and finished second all three times.

The latest occurred on Wednesday, when they were runners-up in the second Centennial League match of the season, held at South Suburban Golf Course in Centennial. Mullen ended at plus-21 over the par-72 layout, four strokes behind winner Arapahoe. Cherry Creek was third at plus-29.

Fittingly, the Mustangs also had the second-place finisher in junior Mario Dino, who fired a 1-over 73. Dino was 37-36 on the day with two birdies on each side.

Senior Eli Marquez shot 5-over 77 in which he was 40-37, a wild back nine that was comprised of four birdies, one par, two bogeys and two double bogeys. Rhett Johnson was ninth at plus-6 (41-37) with three birdies.

Cole Reister (16th, 81) and Thomas Hicks (tied for 18th, 83) also competed for the Mustangs as they once again finished in a relative pack.

The individual medalist was Arapahoe’s Will Kates, who shot 2-under 70 (35-35) with five birdies.

Mullen will serve as host for the third league meet of the season, Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Foothills G.C. in Southwest Denver. First tee shots will be at noon.
