Rivalry loss on the pitch

Regis Jesuit erases two deficits, beats Mullen 4-2 in nonleague.
They had chances and “played well,” according to their coach.

But it didn’t last long enough and they were handled down the stretch.

Parochial-rival Regis Jesuit came into Mullen on Wednesday and left with a 4-2 nonleague victory.

In falling to 2-2, the Mustangs weren’t sharp enough in the second half and they knew it.

“We did have chances,” Mustangs head coach Matthew Guglielmo said. “We were dangerous frequently in the first half. The second half? Not really.”

What’s more, he added, “we probably needed one more (goal in the first half). That being said, (the Raiders) took it to us.”

Mullen twice took the lead with first-half goals by sophomores Eli Kerschen and Andrew DeBerardinis (on a crisp header). However, the Raiders, now 1-0-1, answered both quickly and applied lots of pressure into the second half.

“When you withstand that much pressure, at some point they’re probably going to score,” Guglielmo said.

The Raiders managed the game-winner in the 72nd minute and converted another when Mullen was pressing in the 79th minute.

“I thought (we) played well for a good portion of the game, probably the best we’ve played, but we need 80 minutes, not 40,” Guglielmo said.

The Mustangs will be idle for nine days before resuming their matches at home against Northfield.

“We need some sustained practices, very pointed and focused,” the coach said.
