MBN Roundup: Boys soccer wins on late goal

By The MBN
Cross country does well in Arvada; volleyball sweeps South.
Mullen received some late-match heroics to snap a short losing skid on Friday.

A goal by junior A.J. Gamueda with 1 minute, 8 seconds to play capped a 3-2 nonleague victory at home against Northfield.

The Mustangs moved to 3-2 after dropping consecutive matches.
Gamueda was set up by the second of two assists by freshman Ethan Lehman. His score also followed a Northfield goal that tied it in the 78th minute.

And Mullen played the final 23 minutes with only 10 players after a red card.

“It was a good win for us,” Mustangs head coach Matthew Guglielmo said. “We needed it. We had lost 2 games, so it was great to get a victory at home in dramatic fashion against the No. 4 team (in the Class 4A RPI playoff qualifying).”

Bryce Sohayda and Eli Kerschen also scored for Mullen. And Gamueda added an assist.

All five goals in the match came in the second half.

Mullen’s next match will be Thursday, Sept. 19, vs. Mitchell, 6 p.m., at Garry Berry Stadium in Colorado Springs.

In cross country, Mullen ran in the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arvada West at the Stenger Complex on Friday.

Michael Dudzic again topped Mullen, which finished ninth among 22 teams, by taking 10th place in 16 minutes, 40 seconds. Will Locascio was 25th in 17:34.

Jack Tolbert (46th, 18:18), Aidan Schwarz (78th, 19:12) and Owen McCarter (82nd, 19:15) completed the scoring.

For girls, the Mustangs, ninth among 19 entries, were led by Amy O’Connell, who was 17th, 20:50.

Next were: Madison Wainscoat (47th, 22:26); Alicia Muller (58th, 22:49); Octavia Gomez (59th, 23:03); and Emma Hehn (66th, 23:22).

“They ran strong races,” Mustangs head coach Joe Welling said. “Varsity competitors executed excellent race plans. With a little speed work, they’re going to really start dropping times … looking ahead to the Dave Sanders Meet next Friday, we’ll be able to run our top-10 runners at the varsity level. This should prove to be a great opportunity for race experience and growth.
In volleyball, Mullen moved to 5-0 on Thursday by handling sweeping Denver South 25-18, 25-17, 27-25 in nonleague.

The Mustangs will be in the Silver Creek Tournament in Longmont on Saturday, Sept. 14.
