Boys tennis rolls; boys soccer dominates; volleyball and softball suffer league losses.
In boys tennis, new heights continued for Mullen on Thursday.

The Mustangs hosted Arapahoe and beat the Warriors head-to-head for the first time since 2014, earning a 6-1 victory at Pinehurst Country Club.

By sweeping the first six matches, all in straight sets, Mullen was again led by Luc Caldwell at No. 1 singles. He was joined by George Henry Hanzel (No. 2) and Tanner Amman (No. 3).

In doubles, J.P. Starkey-Coleman Guthrie (No. 1), Greg McMullan-Jack Barker (No. 2) and Charlie Manta-Luc Caldwell (No. 3) each cruised.

Next for the Mustangs is another league dual, at Grandview in Aurora on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 3:45 p.m.

Mullen is 5-2 in duals, 1-1 in league.

On the pitch, Mullen went into Colorado Springs and came away with a 10-2 whipping of hos Mitchell in nonleague.

Eli Kerschen and Ethan Lehman had tricks. Kyle Cooper scored twice and Cole Dempsey and A.J. Gamueda each scored once.

Mullen is 4-2.

The Mustangs will be back at it on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they travel into the mountains to New Castle, where it will meet Coal Ridge, another nonleaguer, at 11 a.m.

In league volleyball at Hutchison Fieldhouse, Eaglecrest swept the Mustangs 25-18, 25-22, 25-21.
Mullen is 6-5 overall, including with a 1-3 finish in the Silver Creek Tournament the past weekend, 0-2 in league. The Raptors are 8-3, 2-0.

The Mustangs had significant opportunities to takes Games 2 and 3, but didn’t handle matters late.

“We lost, but we really competed well against them,” head coach Jeff Oliver said. “We just couldn’t finish anything, but I thought we played very good volleyball.”

Eaglecrest is strong on the outside, he added, “and just the little things, a few too many mistakes. Overall, I was pretty happy with the match. We made some strides from Tuesday’s match against (Cherry) Creek.”

The Bruins dominated Mullen in another sweep.

”I think we played really hard as a team,” said the Mustangs’ Katie Hammond, “we just have a couple things to work on and tweak, and I think we can be up there.”

Oliver cited the play of Bella Wallrath and Macy Schiefelbein, and said this is the kind of competition that will improve his team.

And in softball, Mullen couldn’t hold a three-run lead in falling to host Cherry Creek in Greenwood Village in its league opener.

The Mustangs, now 3-8 overall, scored all of their runs in the first inning and led 3-0 heading into the sixth.

“We played well, but didn’t hit after the first,” head coach Alan Colglazier said.

Mullen will have a home game on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m.
