Mullen drops fifth in a row in league.

The Centennial League skid for Mullen continued on Wednesday, when the Mustangs got dropped 15-3 by Smoky Hill in five innings at Santo “Doc” Scavuzzo Field.

They lost their fifth consecutive game to dip to 3-12 overall, 0-5 in league.

The Mustangs never led and were hit for multiple runs in four of the five innings.

“We just need to continue to battle and move forward, and try to persevere,” Mustangs head coach Alan Colglazier said.

There were two other happenings at the game – one was the unveiling of a press box behind home plate and the other was the Mustangs facing Colglazier’s granddaughter, Delaney Farnsworth, who went four innings to notch the victory.

“Last year, we beat her,” Colglazier said.

“Obviously,” he added, “when you step on the field it’s a different story (than a family relationship).”

The Buffaloes, who improved to 16-3, 3-1, went for 14 hits, including a home run and two triples as there was yet another learning experience freshman pitcher Morgan Margeson. The Buffs opened the game with two singles, a triple and a Mullen error, and the rout was on.

Offensively, Mullen climbed to within 4-2 in the first inning on a single by Avery Panozzo and a walk to Maggie Bertsch. Both would score on wild pitches. But the Mustangs didn’t get any more until the fifth, when Emma DiGiacomo singled and later came home on a single by Bella Hawkins.

There will be two more games this week for Mullen – Friday at home against Fairview in nonleague, 4 p.m., and Saturday at Grandview in Aurora in league, 11 a.m.

“We just have to work and continue to get better and keep our heads up,” Colglazier said.
