Dudzic, Locascio, Toilbert and O'Connell earn Centennial honors.

Late date and site changes after the first snow of the season didn’t make Mullen cross country flinch or freeze last week.

In Saturday’s Centennial League Championships at Cherokee Trail in Aurora, Mustangs boys grabbed third place, girls fifth and the two combined for four postseason honors, three by the boys.

Headed by Michael Dudzic, Will Locascio and Jack Tolbert, Mustangs boys totaled 106 points. Cherokee Trail (61) topped the field; runner-up was Arapahoe (95). Dudzic was fourth (16:56), Locascio fifth (17:12) and Tolbert 10th (17:32). Aidan Schwarz (42nd, 18:57) and Owen McCarter (48th, 19:25) also figured into scoring.

Dudzic and Locascio are deemed all-Centennial League first team and Tolbert as second.

For girls, the Mustangs (147) were fifth behind Arapahoe (32), Cherry Creek (42), Cherokee Trail (84) and Grandview (91).

O’Connell, a freshman, zoomed to 10th in 20:22, a finish earning her all-Centennial second team. Madison Wainscoat (32nd, 23:30), Alicia Muller (33rd, 23:37), Octavia Gomez (35th, 24:21) and Emma Hehn (24:32) were in their usual pack. Mullen also took the next four spots.

“Our kids came out ready,” head coach Joe Welling said, adding the Mustangs are “looking forward to hammering (Thursday’s) regionals course out in Grand Junction to get some state-qualifying performances.”

The Class 4A Region 1, to be held at Lincoln Park Golf Course, will have races at 5 and 5:30 p.m. Mullen will send its top nine on each side.

The meet originally was scheduled to be at the Aurora Sports Park on Thursday and hosted by Mullen. First contingency was Friday at Cherokee Trail, then modified to Saturday’s slot.
