'Stangs 28th in 4A RPI; will get regional seed on Nov. 4.

It was a rough weekend for Mullen volleyball and in more ways than one.

However, the Mustangs have qualified for the postseason and will find out on Monday, Oct. 4, where they will compete in regional rounds.

At the Palmer Ridge tournament in Monument on Saturday, the Mustangs were 1-3. They beat Bayfield 22-25, 25-22, 18-16. And they lost to Air Academy 18-25, 13-15; Coronado 19-25, 16-25; and Discovery Canyon 17-25, 19-25.

Mullen head coach Jeff Oliver indicated three of the field’s teams, including the host Bears, were in the top 10 of Class 4A, but injuries that have haunted his program in recent years arose again. Oliver said two Mustangs suffered concussions and “we were down to our fourth and fifth middies who both swung up from (junior varsity).”

Concerning regional pairings, the Mustangs (10-13) stand 28th among 36 teams that qualify and could be grouped with Discovery Canyon (16-7, No. 9 and it would serve as host) and Battle Mountain (16-7, No. 16), according to projections by ColoradoPreps.com.

Regional rounds will be played on Saturday, Nov. 9.
