Banner night: 'Stangs humble Eaglecrest

'19 title championship placard released; Dominguez, Perez spark 53-19 rout of Raptors.

Two games into the Centennial League, two games after the break and two without injured point guard Megan Pohs, Mullen remains just fine, thank you.

The Mustangs, defending Class 4A Colorado champions, blew out Eaglecrest 53-19 on Friday night at Hutchison Fieldhouse and once again looked sharp.

Now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the loop, Mullen dominated the Raptors (8-3, 1-1), notably on defense – after the first quarter, Eaglecrest suffered the indignity of having just two free throws in the second quarter, zero points in the third, misfiring on 23 consecutive shots from the floor, committing 19 turnovers and going without a basketball for more than 22 minutes.

“Two running clocks (mercy rules) in the Centennial League … we’ll take that,” Mustangs head coach Frank Cawley said in also referring to Wednesday’s victory at Arapahoe.

On the night the school released the hanging of the past season’s championship banner at The Hutch, Mullen enjoyed crisp ball movement, rebounding, defense and pretty much everything else it needed. Offensively, junior Alexa Dominguez, usually the first player off the Mustangs’ bench, scored a season-high 15 points in her second straight start. Nine-of-10 Mustangs scored and sophomore center Imani Perez added 10 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

“She really rebounded with a vengeance,” Cawley said. “She’s stepping out, taking shots … just a great two games for her.”

Said Perez: “My shot was a little off, so I thought I would rebound. As long as we work together as a team, I think we’ll be fine. We don’t rely on just one player.”

Freshman Laci Roffle led Eaglecrest with 10 points.

Next for Mullen is a matchup with defending 5A champion Cherry Creek, Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.

“Now, it gets real,” Cawley said. “We excited. We’re real excited.”

Perez concurred: “Were a good team, so we’re pretty positive we can compete with (the Bruins).”
