Mullen girls again in the swim

AURORA -- Mullen continues to turn up the heat in the pool.

On Saturday, the Mustangs took fifth place in the annual Smoky Hill Swimming and Diving Invitational.

Recently rated No. 2 in Class 4A, Mullen’s considerable depth was a factor and its relay teams continued to rack up valuable points.

It began with the 200-yard medley relay. Mary Macauley, Chase Davison, Lindsey Sowith and Claire Chahbandour finished third in 1 minute, 51.12 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay of Gabrielle Zinis, Sowitch, Chahbandour and Davison Were third in in 1:41.13. And the 400 free relay team of Chahbandour, Macauley, Zinis and Davison were fourth in 3:43.52.

All were state-qualifying times in 4A.

Individually, the Mustangs, coming off a strong showing at Eaglecrest in a Centennial League meet on Thursday, had Sowitch take sixth in the 200 individual medley, 2:17.56; Zinis fifth in the 50 free, 25.52; Anarose Schwamm 16th in the 100 butterfly, 1:06.14; Sowitch fourth, 55.98, and Macauley, fifth, 56.06, in the 100 free; Macauley second, 58.89, and Rachel Rowland 10th, 1:03.65, in the 100 backstroke; and Schwamm fifth in the 100 breaststroke, 1:10.06.

Again, all were SQTs.

In diving, Olivia Brehm was 11th, 301.90 points, and Kendall West 17th, 2:46.96.

Mullen will resume competition on Tuesday, Jan. 14, when it will be at Hinkley in Aurora for a multi-team meet, 5 p.m., and a league meet on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Grandview in Aurora, 5 p.m.
