Heritage shuts out Mullen a 2nd time

Powerful Eagles take a 4-0 decision.

CENTENNIAL – It was another loss to the same team in less than 24 hours and some of the same problems were relevant, but there were less of them.

On Saturday at the South Suburban Ice Rink, Mullen dropped a 4-0 decision to Highlands Conference-leading Heritage. It was less than a day after the Mustangs fell 3-0 to the highly rated Eagles at The Edge.

However, while they were outshot 49-5 on Friday, they were outshot 43-15 on Saturday.

Once again, Heritage, now 8-2 overall and 5-0 atop the conference, generally had its way with Mullen (2-7, 0-5), winning the shots-on-goal race 43-15 and grabbing a 3-0 after the first period.

But two of the goals came on breakaways against Mustangs goalie Connor Mahon, who again dealt with lots of pressure, yet kept the Mustangs in the game. And the Mustangs prevented the Eagles from turning it into a laugher.

Alex Covi relieved Mahon down the stretch.

Mullen will have a three-game week – against Colorado Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the University of Denver, 3 p.m.; and two at The Edge in conference play, Friday, Jan. 17, against Columbine, and Saturday, Jan. 18, versus Chatfield, both at 8:30 p.m.
