Goalie is stellar again; 'Stangs tame Rebels 3-1.
LITTLETON -- In a very important week, Mullen is 2-0.
The Mustangs earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Columbine on Friday night in the Highlands Conference at The Edge Ice Arena.
It lifted Mullen to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in conference.
“The boys played pretty well,” Mustangs head coach Devon Brady indicated.
Despite being outshot 31-16 for the game and 21-11 over the final two periods, Mullen never trailed. First-period goals by Riley Watters and Eoin Canavan produced a 2-0 edge in the first 9 minutes. Robby Witwer scored early in the third period to extend the Mustangs’ lead.
Only a Columbine goal with 3:18 to play prevented the shutout.
Senior Connor Mahon again was stellar, stopping 30-of-31 shots by the Rebels (5-6-1, 4-3-1).
Columbine had won the earlier meeting, 4-2 on Dec. 6.
J.C. Carter and Larry Simons added assists for Mullen, which was only 1-of-7 on the power play, but blanked the Rebels in extra-player chances.
Mullen is looking to cap its best week of the season on Saturday, Jan. 18, with an 8:30 p.m. matchup against Chatfield at The Edge.
