Junior's 4-point game paces 5-3 victory over Palmer.

LITTLETON -- Nick Gilbert finished what he started.

On Thursday, the junior forward began and ended the game with goals as Mullen outlasted Palmer 5-3 in nonconference play at The Edge Ice Arena.

The Mustangs won their third game in four outings and improved to 5-8. The Terrors are 5-10 and have dropped five in succession.

Gilbert scored at 4 minutes, 26 seconds, and 7:28 of the first period as Mullen erupted for a shooting barrage, finishing with a 56-38 edge in shots, notably a season-high 24 in the first period.

Aidan Cashman got Mullen’s third goal, a power-play effort at 12:27 of the second, and Ian McDougall deposited the fourth less than 2 minutes later.

The Terrors kept at it, eventually climbing within 4-3 with 1:01 to play on a score after they pulled their goalie, but Mullen and Gilbert responded, ending it at 16:36 with Gilbert’s hat trick.

Robby Witwer, who had three assists, added the helpers on Gilbert’s first two goals. Gilbert added an assist for a four-point game. Coleman Guthrie, Thomas Oancia and Peter Osborne added assists.

In goal, the Mustangs’ Connor Mahon once again made a difference, turning in 35 saves.

Mullen also played relatively cleanly, being whistled for just three penalties, all minors.

Chatfield awaits Mullen on Monday, Jan. 27, 1:45 p.m., at The Edge as Highlands Conference play will resume.
