Mullen heads for big finish in 4A swim & dive.

THORNTON – Through Day 1 of the Class 4A girls swimming and diving championships, Mullen remains in position for a high finish.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs set four school records and advanced five competitors to Wednesday’s finals, another to one of the 'B' finals. Three will be in four events and two in three races.

“We did very well,” head coach Susan Stone said.

Despite being disqualified in what will be the meet-ending 400-yard relay because of an early start on a leg in preliminaries, Stone said “that happens, but we set records over the first six races and had a lot of personal bests.”

Of Wednesday’s 12 events, Mullen will be in two of the three relays and seven individual races.

Set for the finals after strong prelims showings for Mullen are:

--- The 200-yard medley relay team of Mary Macauley, Claire Chahbandour, Lindsey Sowitch and Chase Davison was second, 1 minute, 45.78 seconds.

--- Davison is second in the 200 freestyle, 1:53.11

--- Sowitch is fourth in the 200 individual medley, 2:07.98, and Macauley 13th, 2:12.28.

--- Gabrielle Zinis (24.31) and Chahbandour (24.39) are third and fourth, respectively, in the 50 free.

--- Sowitch is second in the 100 butterfly, 57.65.

--- Zinis is sixth in the 100 free, 54.31.

--- The Mustangs 200 free relay team of Zinis, Chahbandour, Sowitch and Davison is first at 1:36.66.

--- Macauley is fourth in the 100 backstroke, 58.12.

--- Davison is first (1:03.03) and Chahbandour third (1:04.21) in the 100 breaststroke.

The Mustangs’ school records came in the medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 100 butterfly and 100 breast.

Warmups will begin at 3:30 p.m. and finals at 5.
