Mullen girls hope to play through the Class 4A field this spring with increased numbers and experience.

“There’s quite a spread (in talent on her roster),” Mustangs head coach Ashley Tait said. “But at least this will give us more competition in the (Centennial) League tournaments where they count four scores and it’s good to have more players.”

Returning for the Mustangs, who welcomed 16 at the start of preseason practice – they only had nine in 2019 – is Sofia Choi, who was second at the Colorado 4A meet a year ago with a 5-over-par 77 at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Windsor. Now a sophomore, Choi, Tait said, “has done some swing changes and she’s hammering them out. She’s working on scoring and scrambling.”

Senior Page Sowitch, who qualified for state as a junior, also returns and the Mustangs welcome freshman Katelin Zingler, an emerging junior player who Tait said can score in the high 70s or low 80s.

The rest of the roster, a mix of talents, everything from beginners to those who have played for a few years, will have opportunities to play varsity holes.

Mullen will begin on Wednesday, March 11, 10 a.m., at Springhill Golf Course in Aurora in the first league meet.

The regular season, always challenging and difficult with Colorado’s fickle spring weather, will run into May. Regionals will be May 4-8. The Mustangs are in Region 1 that will be contested at Kissing Camels G.C. in Colorado Springs.

Colorado’s 4A state championships for individual and team -- Windsor has won the past two crowns -- will be May 18-19 at Colorado National G.C. in Erie. Interestingly, it’s the home course of Holy Family senior Hailey Schalk, who will be going for an unprecedented fourth medalist.

Tait knows a little about it – she was a three-time champion while a Mustangs.

“She’s really good,” Tait said of Schalk. “There will be pressure on her at her home course and we hope to put some pressure on her. We have a lot of work to do.”
