Mustangs have been doing swimmingly well

Boys swim and dive readies for Spring 2020.

(Fourth in a series of previews for Spring 2020.)

Mullen swimming and diving has been on the upswing for both genders.

The past month, Mustangs girls finished third as a team in Class 4A and set a half-dozen school records.

Last May, Mullen boys finished fourth in 4A.

And in both instances, the Mustangs’ Susan Stone was named coach of the year.

The temperature in the pool for Mullen, which doesn’t have one, continues to rise.

As for this season’s version of boys, a realistic Stone said “you can’t ask for perfection every year.”

The Mustangs lost only one state-meet swimmer, but have five returning, just three who still compete year-round.

Tops is Will Chavez, who has signed with Southern Illinois. At the 2019 Colorado meet, he was third in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and was part of the 200 free relay team that was second.
He’ll be joined by two other significant seniors, Charlie Baker and Cameron Smooke. Baker was ninth in the 100 back and a member of the 400 free relay team, as was Smooke, who also was ninth in 200 free and 16th in the 100 butterfly.

Junior Noah Maestas was sixth in the 100 breast and on the 400 free relay team, and sophomore Austin Lynn will have his chances to be a regular on the Mustangs rotation that will have to be versatile – the team has 15 members.

“We just need to do the best we can, that’s all we can ask,” Stone said. “I don’t know if we can finish third again, but we could maybe get sixth or better. We’ll see.”

The Mustangs’ first meet will be on opening day for spring competition, March 12, at Cherry Creek in Greenwood Village.

Boys swim and dive regular season will run through May 14. The Centennial League ‘A’ meet will be May 15-16 at Smoky Hill in Aurora, and 4A state meet May 21-22 at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Complex in Thornton.

The defending 4A champion is Greeley West.
