Track is my peace: Issue 2

Agur Dwol, 10th Grader
Agur Dwol, a sophomore, is the defending Class 4A Colorado champion in triple jump. She also was ranked as high as No. 4 in the country this year and was recently named All-America indoors for schoolgirls by National Scholastic Athletics Foundation-New Balance. She writes about conflicting feelings of anger and relief, getting some down time, a shrinking season, prep goals and how the sport provides her a much-needed outlet:
When I found out Indoor Nationals (a high-end meet at The Armory in New York City) was cancelled because of COVID-19, I’m not going to lie.

I was a little bit relieved, like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I was so nervous going into the meet. I no longer had to worry about performing well while I was out there and was excited to start the spring season with my Mustangs teammates.

The next day, (the Colorado High School Activities Association) announced that all spring sports would be suspended until April 7. I was, like, ‘Oh, OK, that’s not bad’ ... now, I have more time to prepare and I had some down time, and I’ll at least get a good five meets, so I wasn’t stressed. A few days later, the CHSAA extended the suspension and I was, like, ‘OK, cool, three meets ...’ (but the state’s stay-at-home order has been extended to April 26; the spring season remains in jeopardy.)

I’ve tried to keep positive throughout all of this, but to be honest, I’m mad about it … like, actually mad.
Then I start to remember that I’m only a sophomore, so I have more seasons to look forward to, even though I was really ready to break the state records this year in, hopefully, both long and triple jumps.

I’ve been going to my local track at Dakota Ridge almost every day and working out because it just takes my mind off of everything that’s going on around me.

The track is my peace.
