Mullen’s Agur Dwol, A.J. Naha and Joey Mahmood are being honored by the Centennial League.

Usually, the suburban league honors male and female athletes of the month as well as a coach of the month. However, because of the problems involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), each of the eight schools are naming their own personnel for the month of March.

Dwol, a sophomore in track and field, has been ranked as high as fourth in the nation in the triple jump this year and is the Mustangs’ female athlete of the month. She also was named an All-America by NASF-New Balance and was to compete at The Armory in New York City in a star-studded indoor meet before the pandemic forced quarantine. Dwol is the defending Colorado 4A champion in the event.

Naha, a senior in baseball, is the Mustangs’ male athlete of the month after displaying leadership in off-season workouts and encouraging younger players in the program who had been struggling. A catcher, pitcher and infielder, Naha and Mullen actually played a game before in-state sports were put on hold – they won 11-1 at Highlands Ranch in five innings in nonleague as Naha was 1-for-3 with a triple, run batted in, run scored and walk.

Mahmood, Mullen’s director of sports medicine, is Mullen’s coach of the month. Along with his team, Mahmood was at the front of the school’s battle against the virus, also helping to implement plans for the Mullen community that included students, teachers and staff to keep it moving forward. Assistant trainer Johnny Garcia’s contributions also were vital.
