New head coach Bennett close to setting staff

Even with the array of problems caused by coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, high schools continue to conduct business.

Some of Mullen’s was solidified on Monday, when new football head coach Jeremy Bennett, hired the past winter, announced his new staff.

“We’re excited,” Bennett said. “It’s all set, but for a couple of spots. We’re still looking at a couple more.”

Bennett, who came to the Mustangs from nearby D’Evelyn in Jefferson County, has a crew with a combined 125 years of experience on the job.

Here are his hires, including five former Mustangs as well as the program’s first female assistant:

Robert Baker, offensive coordinator.

Mike Harrell, defensive coordinator.

Iran Mergerson, outside linebackers.

Shaun Frederick, defensive line.

Jamarr Kearney, associate head coach/wide receivers.

Alex Calderwood, returners/wide receivers.

Jon Dubravac, tight ends.

Leonard Martinez, running backs.

J.J. Bennett, tight ends.

Mike Carias, offensive line.

Jamie Knapke, defensive backs/returners.

Pat O’Neill, junior varsity head coach/statistics.

Mark Reister, special teams.

John Brehm, kickers/punters.

Adriana Martinez, running backs.

Ryan Tuley, inside linebackers.
