Additional Sports get Green Light from CHSAA for Fall 2020

Boys tennis and softball join boys golf as 3-of-9 fall sports to open as scheduled; information on others due by the end of the week.

Add boys tennis and softball to boys golf as 2020 fall sports that will start on time.

As for the other six fall sports, including football, decisions will be announced later this week.

Earlier in the week, boys golf received the go-ahead to begin practice on Monday, Aug. 3, as scheduled. First matches will be Thursday, Aug. 6.

On Wednesday, it was announced boys tennis and softball will open preseason practice on Aug. 10. Opening matches for both sports will be Aug. 13.

All sports must comply with local, state and national guidelines, including modifications, and the Colorado High School Activities Association, in a release, indicated it anticipates a decision from the COVID-19 (coronavirus) Response Team at week’s end.

It’s an encouraging start, new Mullen athletic director Damian Brown said, but there’s much more to handle.

“Ultimately, it could be good for our kids, but we have to be safe and do everything safely,” he said. “Now that (the CHSAA) has said it (plans for sports to open), we have to find out what the different districts will do. If they all don’t have fall sports, we’ll have to change the schedules.

“It could be a good opportunity for our kids to participate, but we have to find the safest way.”
