First up: Mustangs boys golfers teeing off

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Softball and boys tennis will follow next week, but in-staters anxiously awaiting decisions on additional sports.

Call it the most-unusual opening of high-school sports on local and national record.

Today (Aug. 3) marks the first day of fall practice for 2020 as well as the resumption of prep play following a worldwide pandemic that halted all athletic action in March.

For Mullen and every other school in Colorado, the first day of fall preseason practice involves boys golf, but virtually every other sport hangs in the balance. While softball and boys tennis have their go-aheads for Aug. 10, state officials, generally quiet throughout the coronavirus (COVID-19) months but committed to resuming play, have yet to set the rest of fall sports and various districts have either discussed their own shutdown or acted on it (Adams 14).

A statewide decision for fall sports and perhaps the rest of the 2020-21 school year was expected last week, but officials in prep athletics and activities had yet to align with those in the state and health organizations.

And while Colorado appears intent on getting something going for its high-schoolers, multiple other states have either passed on one or more seasons and/or will feature assorted delays.

Mustangs boys golfers, always first up, will have tryouts today at The Meadows Golf Course in Littleton. Head coach Jerry Koehler said he’ll have to make some cuts as interest in the team is up. He expects about 20 hopefuls. They are scheduled for a scrimmage with Bishop Machebeuf on Wednesday at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora and their first match will be next week.
A season preview will be available at MullenHigh.com later this week.
