Remaining 3 sports for Season A due to open practice this week as are 1st varsity events. Games are on.

And so it begins …

In what promises to be one of the most-unique and interesting school years on record, Mullen athletics will take final steps to getting 2020-21 started this week with the first days of practice for three more sports as well as initial varsity action since the worldwide pandemic shut down activity in March.

Boys golf began preseason practice on Aug. 3 and will be joined today (Aug. 10) by boys tennis and softball. Cross country for boys and girls will open on Wednesday (Aug. 12).

“We’re going to get to play and that’s what everyone wanted,” new Mustangs athletic director Damian Brown said the past week.

However, keep in mind high-schoolers will play only sporadically for the start of 2020 as the effects of coronavirus (COVID-19) continue. The above four sports account for what is Season A. The fab four of current sports are eager to set the pace, even one that will be modified and restricted.

Team sports have had their numbers of games and matches reduced, and individual sports will have fewer competitors in cutting down numbers of individuals in matches and races. Plus, play will only go into October as November anf December will be idle.

Seasons B, C and D will each occur over approximately nine weeks.

Officially, and after several changes across the board, the Mustangs will begin the school year on Thursday (Aug. 13) with a boys match at Meadow Hills Golf Course in Aurora. First tee times in the Centennial League opener will be at 12:03 p.m.

This week’s other event will be on Saturday, Aug. 15, with home boys tennis against Arapahoe in the Centennial, first serves at 9 a.m. at Pinehurst Country Club.
