Megan Pohs commits to Regis University

Gifted point guard, all-league and all-state, excited to join Rangers and head into their nursing program.

Quite similar to her game in basketball, it’s about helping people for Megan Pohs.

The Mullen senior announced she has committed to Regis University and will study to become a nurse.

Like others, Frank Cawley isn’t surprised.

“I’m thrilled, thrilled, thrilled,” the Mustangs head coach said. “That’s going to be a perfect spot for her to play and she’s going into nursing. She’ll do great.”

Said Pohs: “My grandma was a nurse and I want to go into that field. My sister’s becoming a doctor and I just like to help people.”

One of the many frustrating aspects of the coronavirus (COVID-19), Pohs said, was that she had to hold back and “wasn’t able to help people.”

But she’ll be able to handle that in the coming years and she said she’s in it for the long run.
Pohs added she will sign with Regis in November.

Heading into the 2020-21 school year, and basketball won’t begin until January in what is being classified as Season B, Pohs will bring some considerable credentials. She has been all-Centennial League three times and all-state multiple times, and is considered the engine of the Mustangs, who won the 2019 Class 4A championship and advanced to the 2020 title game before it was cancelled.

Pohs topped a balanced Mullen (20-7 in 2019-20) in scoring at 11.6 points and assists (2.7). She scored 99 points in the past season’s four postseason games. Mullen also has won its past nine playoff games.

She runs the offense, moves the ball, breaks the press, creates her own shot and shoots 88 percent from the free-throw line. And, according to Cawley, only Pohs’ lack of height – she’s 5-foot-3 – kept larger programs from recruiting her.

“She’s small, but she sure has Division I talent,” the coach said.

Pohs said she made her decision after an unofficial visit and a conversation with her parents.

What wasn’t to like?

“Regis was my top school,” said Pohs, a straight-A student. “(The Rangers) have a really good nursing program, their coaches are really amazing and the schooI fits me … I took the offer and I’m really excited.”

The Mustangs return intact for the coming season. Pohs said she’s also thrilled to watch her teammates’ recruiting opportunities as well as help her team’s chances to play for another championship.

“She’s the leader of our team,” Cawley said. “She’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached. I can’t wait to take the whole program to watch her play. We’ll have season tickets.”
